Today is Wednesday March 11, 2015 but to others it is 311 Day; the unofficial holiday in celebration of the band and it’s fans.

311 Day

This year 311 will be celebrating their 25th Anniversary as a band. But how does a band, like 311, keep going after a quarter century? A hearty breakfast.

I was on my way to work this morning, listening to the radio(Yes, people, like me, still listen to the radio), when I caught Q101’s morning show interview with Aaron “P-Nut” Wills from 311. So I stopped flipping through the other stations and left the dial on 101.1 to hear what the 311 bassist had to say about 311 Day and the band.

P-Nut's 311 Cookbook

P-Nut started the interview saying he was late for the call because he had to make his oatmeal before doing the interview. He then continued talking about the oatmeal explaining that his method of cooking oatmeal is probably different than any method any of the listeners use to cook oatmeal. Once P-Nut started talking about his oatmeal I was hooked. OK, bare with me while I reminisce about P-Nut’s oatmeal recipe(Thankfully he responded to my tweet so I made sure I didn’t mess up his recipe).

Start with Tom’s gluten free oats. Then use about half as much water as the original oatmeal recipe calls for. This is where P-Nut’s method is different than any other way I have ever heard of cooking oatmeal. Substitute the water removed with Dave’s gourmet butternut squash pasta sauce. Once the oatmeal is done cooking sprinkle cheese over the top, but not just any cheese, use the Italian types of cheese that end in a vowel; Parmigiano-Reggiano, Asiago, Mozzarella, etc, or really whatever cheese you got. Once the cheese is melted and stirred into the oatmeal the dish will be similar to risotto. Add salt, pepper, and/or any other spices you may enjoy. P-Nut mentioned if you even think of it as “ewe” or “gross” you are far from right and you shouldn’t knock it before you try it. The recipe stemmed from P-Nut and his wife not being into sweet breakfast foods so they put a savory spin on the classic breakfast food. P-Nut also threw in he has been doing it for 25 years so I think he knows what he is doing.

After the short cooking lesson, of why it was so important P-Nut has his oatmeal before an interview and how different it is, P-Nut talked about how 311 just wrapped up their Caribbean Cruise and what a blast that event is for the band and all of their fans. The 311 Caribbean Cruise took 3000 fans, from all 50 states and 12 countries, from Miami to Jamaica for the time of their lives. He mentioned these cruises are an amazing time for everyone, even the old people who are regulars on cruises. The fans received 3 different 311 shows spanning 72 different songs.

The interview was wrapped up with mentioning 311’s new album, their upcoming Summer Tour and the July 11th show at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. And most of all P-Nut wishing us all a wonderful 311 Day.

I will get back to this article with an update of how my P-Nut Oatmeal turns out. Until then have a Happy 311 Day and let me know if you try P-Nut’s Oatmeal and how you like it?
