artists-pay-tribute-david-bowie__700The world is full of artists. Some are doing what their soul craves and are never heard of. Others do the same and get a chance to leave their imprint in history and their mark on our hearts. I noticed something today that made me stop and think about the power that mark could have on us. Everyone is mourning the loss of the brilliant David Bowie. Everyone. All ages. All walks of life. Kids who weren’t even a thought in their parent’s minds when Bowie was parading through the stereotypes and barricades that surrounded him early in his career. People who I would never have thought even knew who Bowie was, let alone have memories to share about how he had touched their lives in some form or another. The impact he had on this world drastically changed the shape of the music industry and cracked open the doors that led to the still troubled path for homosexuality equality and acceptance. He became an inspiration to everyone who wanted to just be themselves, however eccentric, unconventional or extraordinary they may be. He showed us that it is absolutely acceptable to create whatever you truly believe in. He made a home in this brutal world for the odd ones, the misfits and the dreamers. He gave us hope and a soundtrack to walk along with. He was more than an artist. He was more than an icon. He was a shift in the norm. Every step he took had a meaning to someone or something in this world. There will never be anyone like him ever again.

All of our legends are leaving us. However un-human someone may appear on the outside, our bodies are one in the same. As we get older, our mentors, our muses, our inspirations also age. It is sad to think that our time is limited. It is heartbreaking to see such a pivotal part of history pass on. He left us with his music. He left us with his art. He left this world as a legend. Forever changed because he never settled for mediocrity. May his story, his music, his art still continue to remind us that nothing is too outrageous. There are no limitations on passion. Just be your colorful self and strut through life.

“Never look back, walk tall, act fine.” David Bowie

“Every song of his was a way for me to communicate to others. It was a sedative. An arousal. A love letter I could never have written. It has become and remains a soundtrack to a movie he painted with his voice and guitar.” “Let’s NEVER let go of what he gave us.” -Marilyn Manson

“I can never express into words how you will continue to inspire me… Thank you for showing a pimple-faced, curly-mopped kid that DIFFERENT was THE THING TO BE. A GENIUS for the ages and the ages to come.” -Justin Timberlake

“You were an icon, you changed the idea of what a man should be, your musical genius will live on.” -Frances Bean Cobain

“‘Don’t tell them to grow up and out of it.’ Thank you David Bowie” -Tony Hawk

“I never met a hero of mine and liked it. It just sucks, the pressure is too huge, you can’t enjoy it. David was different. I’ll never forget the caressing of our hands as we spoke, or the light in his eyes. That night something changed in me – I felt a calmness grow, a sureness. I think in those brief moments, he heralded me into my next new life, an old rock and roll alien angel in a perfect grey suit. I realized everything I’d ever done, or would do from then on, would be done like maybe he was watching. I realized I was proud of my spiky strangeness because he had been proud of his. And I know I’m never going to stop learning dances, brand new dances. It’s not going to change, how we feel about him. For the rest of our lives, we’ll always be crashing in that same car.” -Lorde

As for me, my Bowie journey has only just begun. Thank you for for paving the way for all the artists that I love. An artist never truly dies when their music lives on. Welcome home, David.
