angelachowellfriends2I know that I am not the only one who gets excited about this wonderful time of year. Sure, the decorations and parties are a big part of the festivities but in my world, its the music that really gets me excited for this holiday. I grew up singing classic carols with my dad every year. He’d be on the keys and the kids would gather around and scream sing along to our favorite songs. Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree. Jingle Bell Rock. Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. The list goes on and on. Even now, when its our children gathered around my dad and his piano, they still love all the same songs that I did when I was their age.

Its amazing to think of how these songs have stood the test of time. Frosty and his magical hat haven’t aged a bit, the nights are still silent and yes, all the bells in our home will be silver every year. Artists spanning the globe have created Christmas albums signing their versions of these songs. Although I can’t deny my love for Mariah Carey’s Oh Holy Night, it makes me wonder where are all the newer original Christmas songs are? I have heard a few though the years but they just didn’t grab me, or anyone else for that matter.

Then I heard An Original Christmas, an album by Angela C. Howell (Angela) & Friends. I stumbled upon this gem through a YouTube video that is starting to buzz that I will share with you further down the page. I was curious about the writer of this song and I before I knew it, I was sitting back with a glass of wine enjoying this ORIGINAL Christmas Album. Angela has a magnificent voice. I grew up with female vocalist like Bonnie Tyler, The Judds, Reba McEntire, Barbara Streisand, Liza Minnelli, Bette Midler…I heard a little bit of all of them in every song on this album. The self titled An Original Christmas gives you a good indication that this is going to be a unique album. A song about the real reasons we celebrate this season. As the songs continue on weaving though many different genres. The bluesy riffs and keys in the sexy Shimmy Down My Chimney had my toes tappin’. Then an acoustic version of What Child is This filled with her vibrato and harmonies. Beautiful Christian songs perfectly blended with all the best parts of Christmas. This album has a little something for everyone.

It just goes to show you what can happen when you take a few extra moments to look behind a trendy YouTube video. Snap Me a Selfie, Santa is a completely adorable song sung by 11-year old actress Madison White and it fits so perfectly with this album!

I have a feeling that this wont be the last time we hear these songs. I can see kids singing about Santa selfies for years to come as families play this album as they decorate their trees. Its refreshing to find new songs to sing along to. Check out the rest of the album below and if you love what you hear, head on over to her CD Baby site and download the album for yourself!

Extended Plays is an ongoing music series written by myself and my partner James. We listen to music, go with our gut and spill our honest and sometimes brutal opinion all over this blog. We hope you take the time to check out the artists we review for yourselves. We tend to believe that we are always right about everything but the most beautiful thing about music is that our opinion doesn’t matter to anyone but ourselves.
