So writing music reviews, you get a variety of artists with any number of influences and styles. You listen strictly for the music and put aside your personal tastes. I clicked the link and if anyone had been around me they would have seen an obvious look of confusion on my face when I saw Benjamin Dean Wilson. The title of the album is a tongue in cheek declaration though in appearance he resembles “that guy.” It quickly became apparent that this is a man who doesn’t take himself too seriously.

The music though is serious in quality. I quickly realized that I had no idea what was going on and I loved it. It is hard to nail down the influences in order to give you a sense of the music. Something like Gordon Lightfoot or John Denver meets Weird Al YankovicBenjamin tells a story in every song. Each of them leaves you with the sense that the artist is just as confused as any of us about life. The humor is the medicine which allows him to swallow the absurd.

The twang in his voice is like that of the creative masks that, once an artist puts it on, allow them to create without hesitation. In the track A Difficult Decision for Ronny Giovanni there is a segment where there is almost a disco style rap. The beat of the song is contagiously jazzy in a Beck way.
Mr. Paranoid, Lizzy, and Her Family is my favorite song. A humorous take on adults doting over the little girl they’re raising. The happy go lucky tone of the song is a real winner. It changes suddenly when the little girl rages over the impending divorce of her parents. The album ends with the song Vitamin Supplements; the story of a man being sold something by every old friend he runs into. It is comedic in its fear of commerce and coercion.

Benjamin Dean Wilson is a different kind of artist and this is a different kind of album. It may not work for everyone. But some will love it. I know I did.

Extended Plays is an ongoing music series of all the music that I stumble upon. I listen to the music, go with my gut and spill my honest and sometimes brutal opinion all over this blog. I hope you take the time to check out the artists I review for yourselves. I tend to believe that I am always right about everything but the most beautiful thing about music is that my opinion doesn’t matter to anyone but myself.
