It is always refreshing to hear an artist create something so unique while still paying homage to some of the greatest musicians of our time. That is the case with Johnny Coull’s newest record That Cold Year. You can hear the influences of early Elton John, Billy Joel, and Dr. John but with the heart of a real musician with stories to tell. There is not a doubt in my mind that Johnny doesn’t have fun while writing his music. The proof is in these songs. This record is strung together with one of my favorite instruments; the piano. When someone can put the words that are burning into their soul against the sound of the ivories, it is pure heaven. His unique and soulful voice makes his sound a force to be reckoned with. In an era that is still undefined musically, this LP is a welcomed addition. Music that has a heartbeat…a beautiful mind…and guts to stand with the best.

Extended Plays is an ongoing music series of all the music that I stumble upon. I listen to the music, go with my gut and spill my honest and sometimes brutal opinion all over this blog. I hope you take the time to check out the artists I review for yourselves. I tend to believe that I am always right about everything but the most beautiful thing about music is that my opinion doesn’t matter to anyone but myself.
