Morgan X Barrie released his newest album Fall on May 11th and, I have to be honest, it is an absolute joy for the listener. The Canadian singer-songwriter has produced an album with a soul that takes on a journey through the matters of his heart. The first track on the album, Lost Then Found, is a quiet melody of destination making you think there has a been a road traveled. The song captures a moment of assurance and simplicity of knowing that makes one think of a beautiful Sunday morning with the one that matters in your arms.

The beauty of the small things prevails throughout the album. Morgan has a voice with just enough gravel to tell you there are a few miles on his heart. An old soul’s mentality guided in a childlike wonder. Even in the fourth track The Letter there is a sense of purity to the heartbreak Morgan vocalizes. At moments his voice may crack a bit but we all do when we have so much to say. The track Time To Come Home is beautiful in the arrangement of melody and space. His voice is personal but haunts enough with echo to pull you to something mystic. Real has a beat reminiscent of an early eighties New Wave but staying with the acoustic coffee shop that charms one to the album. Feeling Winter is a trip because it feels like Progressive Rock dancing with Folk; echoing with a distance. Then Morgan scales back again with Moments. The song tells the story of the tender little moments. The sound makes one think of stepping out into someplace big and open, with the sun presenting your shadow, then wraps you back into that blanket on a Sunday. Back to where we began.

Morgan X Barrie is certainly emerging. I hope his growth continues because I’d like to keep hearing him.

Extended Plays is an ongoing music series of all the music that I stumble upon. I listen to the music, go with my gut and spill my honest and sometimes brutal opinion all over this blog. I hope you take the time to check out the artists I review for yourselves. I tend to believe that I am always right about everything but the most beautiful thing about music is that my opinion doesn’t matter to anyone but myself.
