Take a little Justin Timberlake and mix it with a dash of Bruno Mars and a touch of Usher and you will have created the young and talented Spencer Rabin. When I first heard his sophomore album Apollo II, I would have never guessed that this is the work of an 18-year-old. There is a familiarity to these songs…a comfort to them…and a maturity that is rare in today’s music. I couldn’t help but think that this album has the guts to stand next to Usher’s Confessions yet with a current vibe that would sync perfectly in today’s musical world.

“I wanted to do something different – I wanted to get out of my comfort zone,” says Rabin. “I felt that doing so would help me grow creatively and musically.”

I personally feel as though Spencer stepped out of his comfort zone and entered into a place he belonged the whole time. After listening to the album a few times, I kept wanting more. Each song has a life of its own. From the smooth beats and perfect melody of Work! to the slow keys strumming along with the confessing lyrics of Anything and everything in-between. My personal favorite is Electric. The track has an energy and a style to it that can compete with JT himself. (Shhhh…don’t tell him I said that.)

Spencer, you need to keep on movin’ in this direction. Your sound has the perfect balance of freshness mixed with a dedication to the artists that came before you. It’s an amazing album, through and through. This is your path. This is your calling.

Extended Plays is an ongoing music series of all the music that I stumble upon. I listen to the music, go with my gut and spill my honest and sometimes brutal opinion all over this blog. I hope you take the time to check out the artists I review for yourselves. I tend to believe that I am always right about everything but the most beautiful thing about music is that my opinion doesn’t matter to anyone but myself.
