Academy Award Winner and 30 Seconds to Mars front man Jared Leto is about to take on his most iconic role to date as the Joker in the upcoming 2016 film “Suicide Squad”. The Joker is one of the most notorious villains in comic books and on the silver screen. Now fans will be able to enjoy a new face; Jared Leto.

From roles as a drug dealer to Olympic hopeful to cross dresser Jared Leto has a proven track record as a stellar actor who can encompass any role thrown his way. Leto is coming into this role after taking home an Academy Award, for his role as Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club, and is filling the shoes of Heath Ledger who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the Joker. I won’t be too quick to judge Leto because look what happened with Ledger playing the role. Ledger was judged super hard for being cast as the Joker since he played in teen romance comedies and then put on one of the best Joker performances we have seen to date.

As seen below Leto has already begun his transformation by cutting off his characteristic locks.

We will have to wait till 2016 to see if Leto steals the screen as the Joker in “Suicide Squad”. Until then here are some of the other notable actors who have played the Joker.

Cesar Romero: Romero was the first actor to take on the cackling prankster the Joker in the 1960’s “Batman” the TV series.

Jack Nicholson: Nicholson had career defining  performance as the Joker in the 1989 “Batman”

Heath Ledger: Ledger won the first Academy Award, for Best Supporting Actor, playing the avatar of anarchy and chaos Joker in the 2008 “The Dark Knight”.

Mark Hamill: Hamill is the most notable actor to do the darker tone voice-over for the Joker in “Batman: The Animated Series” and other related films, series, and video games.

Brent Spiner, Michael Emerson, Richard Epcar, and Troy Baker are some of the other people who have done the voice-over of the Joker.

Are you excited to see Jared Leto take on the role as the Joker? Or did you want someone else to be cast as the Joker?
