Whiplash made quite an impact this year on the film festival circuit and at the 87th Academy Awards. Whiplash won Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Supporting Actor for J.K. Simmons perfomance. The film was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture. Whiplash started out as a short film before being turned into a full length feature film and with that came the parody.

The Short

Whiplash, like most films, started as a short film. Of the original 85 page screenplay 15 pages were used to put together the short film. The short starred Johnny Simmons as the role of the young drummer and J. K. Simmons as the role of the abusive instructor. The film received high praise after being screened at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival that brought on investors to fund a complete feature-length film.

(Damn you Sony Entertainment for not letting us watch this short film)
Damien Chazelle, I hope you don’t mind if I share this short clip to give the readers an idea of how good the short film was.

The Parody

If you have seen Whiplash you know the movie is pretty darn serious. So it makes perfect sense Nacho Punch, a YouTube Channel of sketches, pranks, music videos, animated comedy, series, shows, and your place for the best funny videos on the Internet, created a Whiplash parody; DJ Wh1PLA$h. DJ Wh1PLA$H tells the story of a young DJ as he struggles to make it at Skrillex Academy. Only to find out everyone is a DJ; “Yo bro I am a DJ too… DJ Giltron3000 Flexxxed”. From the description you can tell Nacho Punch is taking a stab at the EDM scene and all of the issues they face which makes for a very enjoyable film.
