David Williams is a well-regarded musician and writer who won me over from track one of his new release Tipping My Hat to Leonard. The sixteen song collection landed in April and delivers with variety, melody, and words. I am not won over easily, but David has a new fan after I gave this album a listen.

The first track, and the inspiration for the title of the album, is a tribute to Leonard Cohen. The famous singer, songwriter, lover, and poet is well eulogized here with a blend of his imagery intertwined with David masterfully spinning them in reverence. Tracks that follow blend jazz with a folk dance mystery. The duets that appear throughout the album are gorgeous in their feel. David tells you a story with each song and his ability as a writer is obvious. Aching for Love is a great track. The sound takes you down a street you’re not too familiar with and reminds me a Tom Waits in his early days. You can feel the slow ache in David’s voice and it is fitting to the scene he sets for the listener.

This album flows like a collection of short stories wrapped in melody. The journey of a troubadour with dusty roads beset on all sides. There is an honesty to every lyric. David’s voice has gravel like Nick Cave. This is especially showcased on the track Icon. He also shows his versatility with upbeat numbers like Frozen in the Ice Age. While the toe taps to the track, the lyrics tell a different tale. The record nods to David’s influences but never leans on them. Soul fills every utterance with a bit voodoo to it too.

This album is simply good stuff. It is rare to find an artist that has all one needs to make good music. David has it everything he needs and accomplishes his task like a master.

Extended Plays is an ongoing music series of all the music that I stumble upon. I listen to the music, go with my gut and spill my honest and sometimes brutal opinion all over this blog. I hope you take the time to check out the artists I review for yourselves. I tend to believe that I am always right about everything but the most beautiful thing about music is that my opinion doesn’t matter to anyone but myself.
